Butenafine hydrochloride

Butenafine hydrochloride (Mentax) is a benzylamine that is structurally related to the allylamines. As with the allylamines, butenafine inhibits the epoxidation of squalene, thus blocking the synthesis of ergosterol, an essential component of fungal cell membranes. Butenafine is available as a 1% cream to be applied once daily for the treatment of superficial dermatophytosis. [Pg.1290]

Butenafine cream, 1%, contains the synthetic antifungal agent butenafine hydrochloride. Butenafine is a member of the class of antifungal compounds known as benzy-lamines, which are structurally related to the allylamines. Each gram of cream, 1%, contains 10 mg of butenafine... [Pg.124]

Butenafine hydrochloride (mentax) is a benzylamine derivative with a mechanism of action and spectrum of antifungal activity similar to those of terbinafine, naftifine, and other allylamines. [Pg.811]

A double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled trial investigated the efficacy of 2% buten-afine hydrochloride cream with added 5% Melaleuca alternifolia essential oil in 60 patients with toenail onychomycosis. After 16 weeks, 80% of patients in the treatment group were cured, as opposed to none in the control group (Syed et al., 1999). However, butenafine hydrochloride is a potent antimycotic in itself and the results were not compared with this product when used alone. [Pg.319]
