The Belgian surveillance of PAH in the atmosphere was not particularly directed on the exhaust gases but if we consider the part of domestic heating and of the fuels used for industrial energy in the production of PAH, we must admit that the exhaust gases must be considered as a minor source (between 2 to 3 %) of direct atmospheric exposure to PAH, except perhaps at some specific areas (high density traffic, urban tunnels, bus stations) and in the case of professional exposure (including the use of some instruments such as chain saws-professional or homeowners). [Pg.153]

There is also an opportunity to use fibre ropes as tension textiles in buildings. An example is a bus station in Cambridge, UK (Fig. 13.25), erected in 1991. The structure was designed with four masts, each with a pair of forestays and back stays to support the 7-metre cantilevered roof. The stays are made of Parafil ropes with a Kevlar core their function is primarily to resist snow loading, but they are permanently stressed to... [Pg.417]

Hospitals are extraordinarily noisy places, sometimes necessarily but often because of poor design and buildings that are ill equipped for sick people. If it was a hotel, you d complain and tell your friends to avoid the place as it s a hospital you have to put up with it. Noise, as we all know, disrupts sleep, which is particularly critical to recovery it also increases stress and raises blood pressure. On the staff side, communication is harder, distractions are greater and concentration is poorer. The combination of quiet floor coverings, private rooms, good insulation, quiet ventilation and heating systems and quiet equipment can transform the environment. An ambience of monastic calm, rather than a downtown bus station. [Pg.242]

Garcia de Alba et al. (1983) carried out a similar study on the lead content of hair of adults and children in Guadalajara, Jal., one of the more important cities of Mexico. The groups studied included male and female workers of a battery factory of the Central Bus Station of the city and their children and a control group. The authors did not mention the method used to wash and prepare the samples prior to analysis. Data on these groups and the results are summarized in Table 26. The value of 13 pg/g was exceeded in all groups. The extremely high values obtained for the battery workers and their families are also remarkable. [Pg.40]

Penclwdd in South Wales in 1942. Open air vulnerability testing of BW simulants was repeatedly conducted in the US from 1949 onwards. For example, in May 1965, travellers passing through Washington s national airport and the city s Greyhound bus station were sprayed with harmless bacteria in order to enable the Army to monitor the spread of the bacteria. [Pg.12]
