The major types of bioactive constituents reported from Broussonetia papyrifera are the prenylated flavonoids, which include compounds of the diphenylpropane, chalcone, flavan, flavanone, flavone, flavonol, and aurone classes (Table 2), Fig. (7). An early study on B. papyrifera resulted in the isolation of two diphenylpropanes, broussonins A (29) and B (30), and a coumarin, marmesin (52), with antifungal activity [39]. Also, a diprenylated diphenylpropane derivative, kazinol F (31) [40], was reported as an antioxidant and tyrosinase inhibitory constituent [34]. [Pg.16]

Similar in appearance to white mulberry, and also naturalized in the United States, is the ornamental shrub, paper mulberry (Broussonetia papyrifera), also native to Asia. This mulberry is shrubby, and may form thick colonies from root sprouts. Paper mulberry occurs around homes, fencerows, and disturbed sites. The bark of the paper mulberry is the source of tapa, a fiber used by Pacific islanders to make clothing. [Pg.448]

Kazinol B (5), a natural isoprenylated flavan isolated from Broussonetia papyrifera (Moraceae), induces the stimulation of respiratory burst in rat neutrophils. This effect is probably mediated by the synergism of PKC activation and [Ca ] elevation in rat neutrophils. The membrane-associated PKC-a and PKC-6 were increased following the stimulation of neutrophils with kazinol B. The conventional and novel PKC isoforms might contribute to the PKC activation upon exposure of cells to kazinol B. In addition, the novel PKC isoforms may play the major role since these are more sensitive and more rapidly activated by kazinol B than the conventional isoforms [28]. [Pg.834]

The characteristics of a rennet, however, depend on other conditions than those which could result from its habitat. Thus it is that Gerber, in a comparative study of rennet enzymes of a parasitic mushroom, Plerotus ostreaius, and of the plant on which it grows, Broussonetia papyrifera, found that they are very different. The rennet of the mushroom is very calciphile, very oxyphile, exceedingly sensitive to alkalis, and little resistant to heat that of the white mulberry, on the contrary, is moderately calciphile, moderately oxyphile, little sensitive to alkalis, and very resistant to heat. [Pg.92]
