Bromal hydrate

Carl Lowig, 1803-1890. Professor of chemistry at Heidelberg, Zurich, and Breslau. He prepared bromine in 1825, but before his investigation was completed Balard had announced the discovery. Lowig discovered bromine hydrate, bromal hydrate, and bromoform, and was the founder of the Silesian chemical industry and of the Goldschmieden alumina works at Deutsch-Lissa. [Pg.748]

Br3CCH(OH)2 (c, II). Bruner2 measured the heat of solution of bromal hydrate (c, II) (freshly crystallized material) in aqueous KOH. [Pg.243]

IR Ai chloral, bromal hydrates, hloro, o-bromophenols, benzoin. [Pg.400]

Yellowish, oily liquid forms with water bromal hydrate which is solid at temps below 50. d 2.66. bp about 174 with decompn. Sol in water, alcohol or ether. [Pg.210]

Bromal—CBr9,COH— 281.—A colorless, oily, pungent liquid sp. gr. 3.34 boils at 172° (341°.G F.) neutral soluble in HaO, alcohol, and ether. It combines with HjO to form bromal hydrate, CBra,CH(OH)j large transparent crystals soluble in HjO decomposed by alkalies into bromoform and a formiate. Produces anaesthesia without sleep very poisonous. [Pg.270]

Dunzelt concluded in his 1896 Inaugural Dissertation (34) that although this correlation seemed to be generally correct, it did not hold for two compounds. Bromal hydrate was found to be very soluble in water and produce narcosis in fish at low concentrations. By contrast, methyl urethane was found to produce only a slight narcotic effect, even though it was only slightly soluble in water. This finding of Dunzelt may have provided Meyer with the impetus to search for another chemical property that better correlated with narcotic potency. Meyer further... [Pg.369]
