Nanoparticles of the semicondnctor titanium dioxide have also been spread as mono-layers [164]. Nanoparticles of TiOi were formed by the arrested hydrolysis of titanium iso-propoxide. A very small amount of water was mixed with a chloroform/isopropanol solution of titanium isopropoxide with the surfactant hexadecyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) and a catalyst. The particles produced were 1.8-2.2 nm in diameter. The stabilized particles were spread as monolayers. Successive cycles of II-A isotherms exhibited smaller areas for the initial pressnre rise, attributed to dissolution of excess surfactant into the subphase. And BAM observation showed the solid state of the films at 50 mN m was featureless and bright collapse then appeared as a series of stripes across the image. The area per particle determined from the isotherms decreased when sols were subjected to a heat treatment prior to spreading. This effect was believed to arise from a modification to the particle surface that made surfactant adsorption less favorable. [Pg.89]

Chlorofonn is too non-polar to dissolve the phenolic compounds under study, but it dissolves many of the monoterpenes, at least to some extent. Because the solubility of some monoterpenes into chloroform was low, different solvent/ solid ratios were tested. These were 50,20,10 and 5 1/kg of dry phloem. The extracts were bright yellow and the strongest colour was with the smallest solvent/solid ratio (51/kg). The colour of the solvent indicated that the solubility of the extractable compounds was not restricting the reaction even with the smallest solvent volume. The taste of the dry samples was evaluated by comparing them to the original phloem sample. The results showed that the mildest taste was in the phloem extracted with a solvent/solid ratio of 50 1/kg and 20 1/kg also had some effect on the taste. The taste of the chloroform-extracted phloem was stabile and it was the same after a week. [Pg.284]

The reaction of diethyl zinc with water produces zinc oxide, and then zinc carbonate, as the alkaline reserve. These chemicals have antiseptic properties which may also prevent the growth of mold in paper. They may also improve the brightness of treated papers. However, it is also known that zine oxide is a photosensitizer (56) which may trigger photo-oxidation of treated papers to initiate a chemical chain reaction that will lead eventually to the formation of acidic products (57). Moreover, the interaction of zinc oxide and zinc carbonate with copper, iron and cobalt present in the paper and their subsequent effects on paper stability have not been studied. [Pg.27]
