Other applications of ceramics require clay, either raw or purified, sand, and feldspar. In making the bricks from these clays, they lose the water and become anhydrous so that the character of the compound is thus considerably altered. Fire clay is also used as mortar for the inside lining of the furnace, which is subject to high heat. The outside work of the furnace is constructed either of common brick or stone, according as the one or the other is most easily procured in the locality.
