Brent method

In this section we will discuss the specific mathematical techniques used to estimate chemical equilibria using the sequential approach, which is the foundation for all versions of the FREZCHEM model, except for versions 2 and 10 (see above). The techniques used to solve (find the roots of) the equilibrium relations can be grouped into three classes simple one-dimensional (1-D) techniques, Brents method for more complex 1-D cases, and the Newton-Raphson technique that is used for both 1-D and multidimensional cases. [Pg.52]

To And the ny conjugate directions, both the Powell and Brent methods require an amount of one-dimensional searches in the order of and thus more expensive than conjugate direction methods that estimate the function gradient. [Pg.105]

For this study, mass transfer and surface diffusions coefficients were estimated for each species from single solute batch reactor data by utilizing the multicomponent rate equations for each solute. A numerical procedure was employed to solve the single solute rate equations, and this was coupled with a parameter estimation procedure to estimate the mass transfer and surface diffusion coefficients (20). The program uses the principal axis method of Brent (21) for finding the minimum of a function, and searches for parameter values of mass transfer and surface diffusion coefficients that will minimize the sum of the square of the difference between experimental and computed values of adsorption rates. The mass transfer and surface coefficients estimated for each solute are shown in Table 2. These estimated coefficients were tested with other single solute rate experiments with different initial concentrations and different amounts of adsorbent and were found to predict... [Pg.35]

Brent s method (Press et al. 1992) is used to find the root of Eq. 3.38 (Vr). Some terms in the latter equation have Vr raised to the fifth power, which means that there could be as many as five roots to such an equation. This root-finding method does not require a derivative as the following Newton-Raphson method does, but it does require a lower and upper bracket within which the true solution must he. In this particular case with... [Pg.54]

Brent s and Brown s methods are variations of Newton s method that improve convergence. The calculation of the elements in in Eq. (L.ll) and the solving of the linear equations are intermingled. Each row of Jt is obtained as needed using the latest information available. Then one more step in the solution of the linear equations is executed. Brown s method is an extension of Gaussian elimination Brent s method is an extension of QR factorization. Computer codes are generally implemented by using numerical approximations for the partial derivatives in J. ... [Pg.715]

Due to seismically irresolvable complexities of fault zone structure, the juxtapositions of footwall and hangingwall rocks predicted from seismic data will in most cases be different from those actually present. The importance of such differences to the prediction of across-fault connectivity, of both hydraulically passive and hydraulically active fault zones, is strongly dependent on the reservoir sequence. Connectivities are calculated for hydraulically passive and active faults offsetting an Upper Brent Reservoir sequence. Shaley fault rocks within brittle fault zones often represent a spatially persistent, although variable thickness, component of the zones and provide a basis for the application of empirical methods of fault seal prediction to brittle faults. [Pg.61]

N02" and N20 (Lou Codispoti Wajih Naqvi, unpublished data) are from TN039, on which 02 was measured colorimetrically, whereas d-Mn data are from TN045 (Lewis Luther, 2000) when an automated titrimetric method was followed for 02. The two methods give similar results, but in the very low range the titrimetric values may be marginally higher (Morrison etal., 1999).
