Illnesses and conditions that affect neurochemistry, but do not affect cognitive functioning. The latter two conditions include primary disorders of the nervous system (such as brain tumors and degenerative diseases) and a host of systemic illnesses that indirectly influence brain chemistry.

Synaptic transmission is brief and occurs within a small portion of the protected confines of the brain. No wonder Thoulet, Vauquelin, Courbe, and other early researchers had such trouble. 

Neurochemistry refers to the chemical processes that occur in the brain and nervous system. The fact that one can read this text, remember what has been read, and even breathe during the entire time that these events take place relies on the amazing chemistry that occurs in the human brain and the nerve cells with which it communicates.
