Box stars

Box stars are less likely to crumble from shock, and are accordingly used in large aerial bombshells. They are also used for festoons and for other aerial tableaux effects. Short pieces of... [Pg.82]

In HT motors, however, these tenninal boxes are always separate because two or more voltages (main and auxiliary). For main terminals there are normally two terminal boxes - one on one side of the stator to house the main three-phase stator teiminals and the second on the other side to form the star point. These boxes are generally interchangeable to facilitate cable routing. [Pg.183]

For large motors, 1000 kW and above, if they are provided with star windings the three neutral end leads must be connected to a separate terminal box to enable mounting of CTs for differential protection. The neutral terminal box need not be phase segregated. [Pg.188]

In a closed box or leaky-box chemical evolution model the most metal-poor stars would have formed before the majority of the Type la SN or the AGB stars... [Pg.224]

In models alc-a2c the predicted stellar distributions are almost indistinguishable (see Figure 1), except for the absence of stars with [Fe/H]< —3.0 in the case with Pop III stars. The reason for this resides in the fact that the Pop III phase is very short and at the same time the star formation rate is small at early stages. In the closed-box cases (models bl and b2) the difference is more noticeable since at the beginning the star formation is quite high. In both models, in fact, no stars with metallicity lower than -3.0 and -2.0, respectively, are predicted. The distribution of stars with metallicity, in turn, influences the calculation of [< Mg/H > ] and [< Fe/H > ]. For the ale and a2c models there is very little difference in these average values, whereas for bl and b2 model the [< Mg/Fe > ] varies from... [Pg.373]

Pop III stars in classic monolithic models for ellipticals (closed-box) produce larger, although still acceptable, [< Mg/Fe > ] ratios. However, the predicted integrated colors are too red. As a consequence these models should be rejected. [Pg.374]

In a closed box, the star formation rate can only decrease with time. Thus the timing of a collision is irrelevant for the metallicity history of such a galaxy the final abundance of metals will always increase relative to the moment of stripping. In contrast, in an open system, the global star formation rate can recover due to infall of externally or internally supplied diffuse gas and clouds. The metallicity history then becomes sensitive to the timing and frequency of such events. The final star formation rate may resemble an anemic systems. [Pg.379]

Fig. 3.20. Idealized continuum and actual fluxes measured in 50-A-wide bands of A7 stars in the Hyades open cluster with Teff = 8000 K, plotted against inverse wavelength in turn-1. Horizontal lines above the spectrum show the locations of the Johnson U, B, V pass bands and the vertical boxes show schematically the corresponding properties of the Stromgren system with central wavelengths in A. (In that system, there are actually two H/3 pass bands, one narrow and one broad, so that comparison of the two gives a measure of the strength of the line.) Some prominent spectral features are marked. Fig. 3.20. The stars indicate that every Student can have any number of accomplishments, and every Skill can be the accomplishment of any number of Students. The stick figure and the box represent types of objects the use of the stick figure instead of a box is optional and highlights the expectation that Student may be one of many roles played by any one object. [Pg.30]

In Fig. 6, we report the radius an the mass of the compact star RX J1856.5-3754 inferred by Walter Lattimer (2002) (see also Kaplan et al. 2002) from the fit of the full spectral energy distribution for this isolated radio-quite neutron star , after a revised parallax determination (Kaplan et al. 2002) which implies a distance to the source of 117 12 pc. Comparing the mass-radius box for RX J1856.5-3754 reported in Fig. 6 with the theoretical determination of the MR relation for different equations of state, one concludes that RX J1856.5-3754 could be (see e.g. Fig. 2 in Walter Lattimer, 2002) either an hadronic star or an hybrid or strange star (see also Drake et al. 2002). [Pg.369]

From the thermodynamic standpoint, the basic components of stars can be considered as photons, ions and electrons. The material particle gas (fermions) and the photon gas (bosons) react differently under compression and expansion. Put n photons and n material particles into a box. Let R be the size of the box (i.e. a characteristic dimension or scale factor). The relation between temperature and size is TR = constant for the photons and TR = constant for the particles. This difference of behaviour is very important in the Big Bang theory, for these equations show quite unmistakably that matter cools more quickly than radiation under the effects of expansion. Hence, a universe whose energy density is dominated by radiation cannot remain this way for long, in fact, no longer than 1 million years. [Pg.130]

Summing up the dynamical argument, telescopes reveal the architecture and motions of the cosmos on every scale. Planets, stars, galaxies, and clusters of galaxies are nested one within the other like Chinese boxes. But then the need for dark matter suddenly arises. Without it, stars at the edge of our Galaxy would fly off and the swarms of galaxies in clusters would scatter like birds. [Pg.199]

The energy released by nuclear reactions provides the power that causes stars, including our Sun, to shine. The realization that stars are fueled by nuclear reactions was key to understanding the long lifetimes of stars and to reconciling the age of the Sun with the age of the Earth (see Box 3.1). The energy budget of a star represents a balance between... [Pg.58]
