Note that ethylbenzene is a derivative of two basic organic chemicals, ethylene and benzene. A vapor-phase method with boron trifluoride, phosphoric acid, or alumina-silica as catalysts has given away to a liquid-phase reaction with aluminum chloride at 90°C and atmospheric pressure. A new Mobil-Badger zeolite catalyst at 420°C and 175-300 psi in the gas phase may be the method of choice for future plants to avoid corrosion problems. The mechanism of the reaction involves complexation of the... [Pg.154]

Violent reactions with ammonium salts, chlorate salts, beryllium fluoride, boron diiodophosphide, carbon tetrachloride + methanol, 1,1,1-trichloroethane, 1,2-dibromoethane, halogens or interhalogens (e.g., fluorine, chlorine, bromine, iodine vapor, chlorine trifluoride, iodine heptafluoride), hydrogen iodide, metal oxides + heat (e.g., beryllium oxide, cadmium oxide, copper oxide, mercury oxide, molybdenum oxide, tin oxide, zinc oxide), nitrogen (when ignited), silicon dioxide powder + heat, polytetrafluoroethylene powder + heat. [Pg.849]

In the 1950s, it was reported that the reaction of cyclopropane with lithium aluminum hydride gave tripropylaluminum. However, this result was not verified. The reaction of cyclopropane in the vapor phase with diborane to monoalkylcyclopropanes was shown to be fairly regioselective, the products being derived from addition of the hydride to the most-substituted carbon atom, and the boron to the least-substituted carbon atom. With butyl-, pentyl- and octylcyclopropanes after oxidative workup the linear primary alcohols 3 were obtained as the major products together with small quantities of the 2-methyl derivatives 4. [Pg.1954]
