The use of copolymers is essentially a new concept free from low-MW additives. However, a random copolymer, which includes additive functions in the chain, usually results in a relatively costly solution yet industrial examples have been reported (Borealis, Union Carbide). Locking a flame-retardant function into the polymer backbone prevents migration. Organophosphorous functionalities have been incorporated in polyamide backbones to modify thermal behaviour [56]. The materials have potential for use as fire-retardant materials and as high-MW fire-retardant additives for commercially available polymers. The current drive for incorporation of FR functionality within a given polymer, either by blending or copolymerisation, reduces the risk of evolution of toxic species within the smoke of burning materials [57]. Also, a UVA moiety has been introduced in the polymer backbone as one of the co-monomers (e.g. 2,4-dihydroxybenzophenone-formaldehyde resin, DHBF).

It has been known for centuries that many compounds emit visible radiation when they are exposed to sunlight. The accepted involvement of CpG methylation in transcription regulation has guided various lines of research into the direct effects methylation may have on chromatin structure. As early as 1982, Felsenfeld and co-workers looked for effects of DNA methylation on the affinity of DNA for histone octamers they reported a slight increase in this parameter [163]. Nightingale and Wolffe [164] using mononucleosome reconstitution on a specific sequence, the 5S rDNA from X. borealis, failed to see such an effect. More recently, Travers (personal communication) has seen clear-cut differences in the affinity of the histone octamer for a number of methylated versus unmethylated sequences. The fine structure of the core particle was, however, unaffected by the methylation status of the DNA [165]. 

This study provided necessary information toward the chemical identification of the sex pheromone of P lata, which can then be used to monitor its population in relation to that of P. borealis, or as a means to control the cockroach itself, as it is an occasional indoor pest. We have carried out a similar study with Caudell s wood cockroach, Parcoblatta caudelli Hebard, and have demonstrated that in this species calling also is associated with pheromone release and that the sex pheromone is produced in tergites 1-7 (Gemeno et al, 2003b).
