Body weight and food intake

Maternal morbidity/mortality, clinical condition, body weight, and food consumption are monitored throughout the study. Typically, the dams are observed at the beginning and end of each working day for morbidity/mortality and at least once after each dose administration to detect any abnormalities in appearance or behavior. Body weight and food intake are usually recorded twice weekly, at least throughout the dosing period.

In mice fed a diet of up to 10% cayenne for 4 weeks, only minor effects of cayenne were observed, including a slight glycogen depletion and anisocytosis of hepatocytes. General health, body weight, and food intake were apparently not affected, and no treatment-related changes were observed in any of the tissues examined (Jang et al. 1992). 

At various daily time points during specified days of both the repeated dose phase and the withdrawal period, the rats are observed for changes in behavior, and body temperature, body weight, and food intake are recorded (Teuns, 2015 Table 15.1).

Body weight and food intake were measured weekly throughout the experimental period.
