Bocconia cordata

Table 6 summarizes the results of alkaloid isolation studies. The structure of the new alkaloid bocconine (239) from Bocconia cordata was deduced mainly on the basis of n.m.r. studies.231 The c/D-ring substitution pattern was indicated by comparison of its n.m.r. spectrum with those of sanguinarine and chelery-thrine. The downfield shift of the C(11)-H by 0.67 p.p.m. in 5,6-dihydrobocconine... 

The species of the genus Macleaya, namely M. cordata and M. micro-carpa, perennial herbs from the Far East, are used in Russia as a source of the natural mixture of sanguinarine and chelerythrine (called sanguiritrine), that has been introduced into medicine for the treatment of various diseases. The content of QBA in the leaves ofM microcarpa has been found to be unusually high, up to 1.97% [66], The QBA contents in M. microcarpa and M. cordata cultivated in central Europe [37,38] are considerably lower. Similar low yields have been found by Bulgarian, Japanese, and Russian authors [5,6], Chelirubine, chelilutine, and macarpine have also been isolated from Macleaya species [37,38], The alkaloid bocconine [35], isolated from M. cordata (invalid synonym Bocconia cordata Willd.) in 1965, is identical to chelirubine [34], described for the first time in 1954 [30],... 

Bocconoline, a minor alkaloid from Bocconia cordata Willd., (Papaveraceae) has structure (154). Corynolamine (155), isolated from Corydalis incisa Pers. (Fumariaceae) together with corynoline and corynoloxine, is structurally related to bocconoline since it too possesses a C-8 hydroxymethyl function. 

Sanguinarine, C2oHi304N-H20, was the name given to an evidently impure preparation from S. canadensis (17). It was first obtained in a pure condition under the name of -chelerythrine from chelidonine (18) and subsequently directly from Ch. majus (19). More recently it has been obtained from the roots of Glaucium fimhrilligerum (15). Its reported occurrence in Bocconia cordata (20) could not be confirmed (10). 

Reports have appeared on t.l.c. methods of detection of benzophenanthridine alkaloids in Bocconia frutescens, Macleaya microcarpa, and M. cordata and in Fumaria capreolata. A colorimetric method of determining the alkaloids in B. cordata has been described. ... 

Chelerythrine, C2oHi704N-H20, has been isolated from Ch. majus (1, 5, 6), Sanguinaria canadensis L. (7, 8), Bocconia arborea Wats. (9), the roots but not the leaves of B. cordata Willd. (10, 11, 12), B. pearcei Hecht. (13), EschschoUzia calif arnica Cham. (14), and Glaucium fimbrilligerum Boiss.
