Blowpipe

Suspend the bomb by a wire or a metal rod through F. Fill with water the annular space between the pillar F and the hole in the top of H. Now heat the base of A with a pointed flame, e.., from a blowpipe pointing upwards. The time required for heating in this way is usually about i minute, but an ordinary Bunsen flame, used without concentration on the bottom of A, may require about 4 minutes. The... 

Pyrex glass is preferable, but this requires an oxy-coal gas blowpipe for manipulation. Suitable melting point tubes may be purchased from dealers in scientific apparatus or chemicals. It is, however, excellent practice, and an essential part of his training, for the student to learn to prepare bis own capillary tubes. 

After it leaves the stoves, the hot blast enters a large refractory-lined busde pipe to distribute the gas evenly around the furnace. Multiple connecting pipes (tuyere stock) direct the hot blast to the blowpipes. At the ends of the blowpipes are the tuyeres, water-cooled copper no22les set into the refractory lining of the blast furnace.

Stirring rods. These are made from glass rod 3-5 mm in diameter, cut into suitable lengths. Both ends should be rounded by heating in the Bunsen or blowpipe flame. The length of the stirring rod should be suitable for the size and the shape of the vessel for which it is employed, e.g. for use with a beaker provided with a spout, it should project 3-5 cm beyond the lip when in a resting position. 

The table should be placed so that direct sunlight does not fall on the blowpipe flame. If this can happen, there should be a blind to cut out the sunlight. It is difficult to work glass in a flame in sunlight because the flame is then so difficult to see and the temperature of the glass cannot be judged properly. 

Use of a Bent Blowpipe and Double Tipping Device For getting at tubes placed awkwardly in complicated apparatus a bent tubular blowpipe is very convenient. A useful design is shown in Figure 83,1. 

We think that a long thin blowpipe, as in Figure 83,1, but bent at the end through a greater angle—about 150°—would be very useful for working on complex apparatus. It would enable the back of tubing to be worked from the front.
