Because gas bubbles a few microns in diameter do not normally leave the vasculature, they constitute true blood pool contrast agents, that is, agents that, when submitted to US, light up the blood, hence the blood vessels and the chambers of the heart. The dose of gas needed for effective contrast enhancement is very small, typically on the order of a fraction of a milliliter, dispersed within some 10 bubbles a few microns in diameter. The total amount of RFC administered to a patient is on the order of milligrams. This dose is minuscule when compared with the grams of contrast agents currently used in X-ray or MRI.
