Generating an outline before you drafl an essay will help you in several ways. First, it will give structure to your ideas. By mapping out the order in which those ideas will flow, you create a roadmap for the drafting process. The roadmap assures that you won t veer off topic, helps prevent writer s block, and speeds up drafting. 

The move concept is a bit easier to illustrate with examples hence, we do this with two jokes. The overall purpose of a joke is to make the reader (or listener) laugh. The smaller parts of the joke—the moves—serve as building blocks to help the teller (writer) achieve the overall purpose of the joke. 

On November 11, 2003, Ray Kurzweil and John Keklak received U.S. Patent 6,647,395 for software that creates poetry. These programs read a selection of poems and then create a language model that allows the program to write original poems from that model. This means that the system can emulate words and rhythms of human poets to create new masterpieces. The system can also be used to motivate human authors who have writer s block and are looking for help with alliteration and rhyming.

Why should you bother making an outline before writing First, an outline helps you think through what you will say, so it can save you time when you actually start writing. In addition, it can show omissions in your paper. An outline can even help you avoid writer s block One of the most important reasons to do an outline before you start writing is to help you evaluate your thesis. Is your thesis narrow enough Is it too broad Can you support it adequately Here s how to use your outline to test your prewriting material. 

Some may find it sufficient to work up an outline as an alternative to writing an extended abstract. Detailed outlines can inhibit creativity and idea exploration however, once the subject matter is fairly fixed in mind, outlining a presentation should not be too risky. Nonetheless, should you find that the ideas are not as fully developed as you thought they were (as evidenced, e.g., by repeated periods of writer s block), return to a fuller exploration of the presentation s flow by writing more on your intended subject.

Every writer, sooner or later, suffers from some form of Writer s Block, the inability to think of or organize ideas. Symptoms may include sweaty palms, pencil chewing, and a pronounced tendency to sit in corners and... 

Don t try to write the entire paper in one sitting. By doing so, you may place yourself under too much pressure. Writer s Block often accompanies the up against the wall feeling that strikes at 2 00 a.m. the morning your essay is due at 9 00. Rome wasn t constructed in a day, and neither are most good essays. 

If Writer s Block does hit, remember that it is a temporary bogdown, not a permanent one. Other writers have had it—and survived to write again. Try leaving your papers and taking a walk outdoors or at least into another room. Think about your readers—what should they know or feel at this point in your essay As you walk, try to complete this sentence What I am trying to say is.. . . Keep repeating this phrase and your responses aloud until you find the answer you want. 

No one—not even the very best professional writer—produces perfect prose every time pen hits paper. If you re blocked, you may be trying too hard if your expectations of your first draft are too high, you may not be able to write at all for fear of failure. You just might be holding yourself back by being a perfectionist at this point. You can always revise and polish your prose in another draft—the first important step is jotting down your ideas. Remember that once the first word or phrase appears on your blank page, a major battle has been won.
