Effects of Blender Shear on the Molecular Weight of the Polymer... 

Twenty-eight mud samples were tested in the laboratory to predict abrasion equations that will aid mud engineers for better treatment of itabirite mud systems. Three different ranges of particle size of itabirite were selected for the tests. Particle sizes between 74 and 125 microns, between 44 and 74 microns, and between 37 and 44 microns were used. Thirty-minute abrasion tests were conducted with a modified Hamilton Beach Blender at 9800, 11200, 12750, and 14350 RPM. Rheological properties, filtration properties, and abrasiveness were studied and analyzed. Regression analyses were performed between abrasion and the parameters of size, polymer concentration (Drispac Superlo or Kelzan XCD), and shear rate investigated In this research. 

The polymer was inverted to be water external either in PW or in caustic solution by shearing in a blender for 20 seconds. The polymer solution inverted in PW was the "chase polymer solution", which is designated as 30HPA, and the polymer solution inverted in caustic solution was the "blend solution of alkaline and polymer," which is designated as 30HPA/NaOH. 

Polymer blends are produced by mixing incompatible polymers in the liquid state. In blenders such as two-roll mills and internal mixers shear as well as elongational flows occur and in most cases the flow field is rather complex. 

For structured polymer solutions where polymer chains are tangled, not all the ionic groups are accessible by the reagent. These solutions may require to be subjected to a high degree of shear, from a stirrer or blender, prior to conducting the titration. 

These polymeric solutions were sheared in a Waring blender at 25,000 ipm for 2 minutes in order to determine the effect that continuous shear has on the polymer s ability to suppress mist formation. The 1 million MW PEO solution was sprayed and the AD(reduction) value was calculated to be < 6%, representing a 70% drop in mist...
