Birefringence electric

In streaming solutions, the chains become oriented parallel to the flow direction, with subsequent modification of physical properties. The birefringence, electrical anisotropy and light-scattering properties indicate such linearly extended chains, but in very concentrated solutions, or in the presence of electrolytes, they indicate the coiling up of these chains. [Pg.239]

Values of t determined in this manner may be compared with estimates from other physical measurements such as flow birefringence, electrical birefringence, and forward depolarized Rayleigh spectra. [Pg.182]

Any anisotropic property, from optical birefringence, electric susceptibility, electric or thermal conductivity, or orientation dependent spectra, can be used to probe the average state of alignment. Quantities measured in such experiments are most often proportional to the square of the distortion... [Pg.261]

Fig. 1. Representative device configurations exploiting electrooptic second-order nonlinear optical materials are shown. Schematic representations are given for (a) a Mach-Zehnder interferometer, (b) a birefringent modulator, and (c) a directional coupler. In (b) the optical input to the birefringent modulator is polarized at 45 degrees and excites both transverse electric (TE) and transverse magnetic (TM) modes. The appHed voltage modulates the output polarization. Intensity modulation is achieved using polarizing components at the output. Fig. 1. In an electrooptic material the phase retardation angle is controlled by altering birefringence, which is in turn controlled by the potential of an apphed electric field. An electrooptic device thus acts as a variable phase optical retardation plate, and can be used to modulate the wavelength or intensity of an incident beam. [Pg.340]

The addition of salts modifies the composition of the layer of charges at the micellar interface of ionic surfactants, reducing the static dielectric constant of the system [129,130]. Moreover, addition of an electrolyte (NaCl or CaCli) to water-containing AOT-reversed micelles leads to a marked decrease in the maximal solubihty of water, in the viscosity, and in the electrical birefringence relaxation time [131],... [Pg.485]

The physical properties (7-10) of our E-V copolymers are sensitive to their microstructures. Both solution (Kerr effect or electrical birefringence) and solid-state (crystallinity, glass-transitions, blend compatibility, etc.) properties depend on the detailed microstructures of E-V copolymers, such as comonomer and stereosequence distribution. I3C NMR analysis (2) of E-V copolymers yields microstructural information up to and including the comonomer triad level. However, properties such as crystallinity depend on E-V microstructure on a scale larger than comonomer triads. [Pg.371]

The first and third order terms in odd powers of the applied electric field are present for all materials. In the second order term, a polarization is induced proportional to the square of the applied electric field, and the. nonlinear second order optical susceptibility must, therefore, vanish in crystals that possess a center of symmetry. In addition to the noncentrosymmetric structure, efficient second harmonic generation requires crystals to possess propagation directions where the crystal birefringence cancels the natural dispersion leading to phase matching. [Pg.2]

The Kerr effect is the birefringence induced in a medium by an external electric field (12). From such an experiment we deduce the molar Kerr constant mK, thus... [Pg.236]
