If the silica sheets in a 2 1 Fe-rich clay had enough A1 substitution to adjust to the size of the octahedral sheet, this would most likely provide sufficient layer charge to cause contraction and the formation of a biotite mica, or the bonding of a positively charged brucite sheet and the formation of a chlorite. Low-temperature micas of this composition may well exist, but have not yet been recognized. It is not known if low-temperature chlorites of this composition can form. [Pg.173]

The ease with which feldspar enters into solution during smelting depends upon its fineness 120-140 mesh material is common in the enamel industry. Potash spar almost always is used. Soda spars frequently cause fishscaling in enamels that are entirely satisfactory when made with potash. Such impurities as garnet, hornblende, tourmaline and biotite mica cannot be tolerated. They maintain their identity throughout smelting, rise to the surface of the milled enamel and appear as hlack or hrown specks in the finished product.
