Biology Stories

The figure that accompanies each article is frequently supplied by an expert external to NCBI, in which case the source of the figure is cited. The result is an interactive tutorial that tells a biological story. [Pg.54]

In 1971 the Protein Data Bank - PDB [146] (see Section 5.8 for a complete story and description) - was established at Brookhaven National Laboratories - BNL -as an archive for biological macromolccular cr7stal structures. This database moved in 1998 to the Research Collaboratory for Structural Bioinformatics -RCSB. A key component in the creation of such a public archive of information was the development of a method for effreient and uniform capture and curation of the data [147], The result of the effort was the PDB file format [53], which evolved over time through several different and non-uniform versions. Nevertheless, the PDB file format has become the standard representation for exchanging inacromolecular information derived from X-ray diffraction and NMR studies, primarily for proteins and nucleic acids. In 1998 the database was moved to the Research Collaboratory for Structural Bioinformatics - RCSB. [Pg.112]

The chemistry of carboxylic acids is the central theme of this chapter The impor tance of carboxylic acids is magnified when we realize that they are the parent com pounds of a large group of derivatives that includes acyl chlorides acid anhydrides esters and amides Those classes of compounds will be discussed m Chapter 20 Together this chapter and the next tell the story of some of the most fundamental struc tural types and functional group transformations m organic and biological chemistry... [Pg.791]

The reason is basically the same story we learned above about why the kinds of functional biology cannot be identified with those of molecular biology. Because the same functional role can be realized by a diversity of structures, and because natural selection encourages this diversity, the full macromolecular explanation for (PS) or for (G) will have to advert to a range of physical systems that realize independent assortment in many different ways. These different ways will be an unmanageable disjunction of alternatives so great that we will not be able to recognize what they... [Pg.131]

David Hull The story that you tell from your own experience with socio-biology and later evolutionary psychology is commonplace in science. Science does not always supply a warm, supportive environmental for scientists. I wrote a very long book dealing with how the rise of cladistic analysis would kill it. [Pg.174]

Unlike selenium there is no required biological role for tellurium in bacteria or plants that has been determined however, this may ultimately not be the whole story.111 Selenium was only viewed as a toxic metalloid with no necessary role for metabolism until at least the 1950s see above. While tellurite is less soluble than tellurate in aqueous solution, in general tellurite is probably more toxic to most organisms.190 The non Te-resistant wild type E. coli bacterium (Gramnegative) has MICs of 1 to 3 ppm for tellurite and tellurate.144,191,192 Tellurite is used to enrich and select for Staphylococcus aureus.169,193,194... [Pg.702]
