Biological response modifiers defined

The term immunomodulators has been employed to define agents or approaches that will modify the relationship between tumour and host by modifying a host s biologic response to tumour cells, with an enhanced therapeutic benefit. The cascade of the cellular immune system is irutiated by the uptake and processing of antigen by the macrophage. 

These studies were initially established to validate the use of immunoassays for carcinogen-modified DNA with human samples. The original goals were to define a dose-response for DNA adduct formation in humans under controlled conditions, and to explore a possible relationship between adduct formation and observable biological consequences such as tumor remission.
