First, there is a lag phase during which the microbial population adapts to the available test C-substrate. Then, there is the biodegradation phase during which the adapted microbial population begins to utilise the carbon substrate for its cellular life processes, as measured by the conversion of the carbon in the test material to CO2. Finally, the output reaches a plateau when all of the substrate is completely utilised.

Sample Preservation Without preservation, many solid samples are subject to changes in chemical composition due to the loss of volatile material, biodegradation, and chemical reactivity (particularly redox reactions). Samples stored at reduced temperatures are less prone to biodegradation and the loss of volatile material, but fracturing and phase separations may present problems. The loss of volatile material is minimized by ensuring that the sample completely fills its container without leaving a headspace where gases can collect. Samples collected from materials that have not been exposed to O2 are particularly susceptible to oxidation reactions. For example, the contact of air with anaerobic sediments must be prevented. 

Biodegradation of alcohol sulfates do not produce stable metabolites as confirmed by the test of metabolites of Gerike and Jasiak [427]. Results for the initial and final phases were 104.2 2.1 and 102.4 2.5, respectively, which do not allow the existence of stable metabolites.

The biodegradation of branched-chain alkanol ethoxyethylates was carried out by the standard OECD confirmatory tests and the metabolites fractionated after solid-phase extraction.
