Biocides potent

Antisyphilitics. Mercuric sahcyiate/T77(9-72-/] (6) and mercuric succinimide [584 3-0] (7) are simple salts prepared by the reaction ia water of mercuric oxide and sahcyhc acid or succinimide, respectively. Use as antisyphilitics has been substantially eliminated by virtue of the discovery of more potent and effective nonmetaUic biocides. 

Several academic and pharmaceutical groups have conducted structure-based design and SAR studies around triclosan aiming at harvesting its potency without its biocidal component. Among the results of these efforts, CPP (24) was found to be sevenfold more tightly bound to E. coli Fabl than triclosan with an MIC value of 0.07 pg/mL, fourfold lower than that of triclosan [43]. Avermectins, which were found by research groups at the Kitasato Institute, headed by Omura, and at Merck company, headed by Stapleg, have potent biocidal activities against a wide spectrum of nematodes, insects, and arachnids [217]. Various iodonium salts are potent sequestering agents for PQQ [161]. In particular, bis-iodonium salts 54 and 55 inhibit PQQ at a nanomolar level (7-13 nM) and are nearly a 1000 times better inhibitors of PQQ than PhalCl and DPI (52). The potential implication of this activity is in the possible uses of bis-iodonium salts as biocides and in particular as a new class of antimicrobial agents [161].
