Several reasons are behind the widespread use of zinc oxide. Zinc oxide is a popular crosslinker for rubber and for various resins. Zinc oxide is also used as an UV stabilizer and as an additive having biocidal activity. It is frequently used in paints. Zinc oxide also has a relatively high refractive index which makes it an efficient white pigment. 

Water solubility and rate of migration should also influence the choice of biocide. This can be related to the MIC value to give an index of solubility (MIC/solubility in water) (Table 2). 

Values of less than one for the index of solubility could indicate that theoretically, insufficient biocide would be present on the surface to kill the microorganisms. High solubility values could indicate a tendency for excess leaching in high moisture environments.

Several investigators have demonstrated that there is no direct correlation between numbers of SRB and the likelihood that corrosion has occurred or will occur. Jack and coworkers [41] prepared a review of 30 months of electrochemical measurements, weight-loss data, water chemistry and microbiological data for an oilfield waterflood operation in which produced brine was injected to displace oil from the reservoir. They concluded that SRB numbers could be used as an index of biocide performance in these field systems. No other correlations between corrosion measurements and microbial numbers were found. 

On each peptide set, we applied the same GA protocol. We identified two equations describing biocidal activity. The was of 0.92 and 0.81 respectively. Equation 1 was obtained from a dataset of peptides having a length between 7 and 11 amino acids (55 peptides). Equation 2 was obtained using peptides shorter than 30 amino acids and a Roman index between 1 and 2 kcal/mol for a total of 92 peptides. In Eq. 1 the critical parameters for antimicrobial activity are the peptide charge in acid and neutral solution and the number of polar amino acids in the sequence. Equation 2 is similar to Eq. 1 and gives similar importance to peptide charge.
