Biochar for Soil Conservation and Enrichment

Fortunately, human ingenuity and technological tools can be used to prevent or reverse desertification. One of the first points to recognize with respect to desertification is that deserts are the natural state of much of Earth s surface area. Some substantial problems have occurred because of humankind s insistence on trying to convert desert lands to cropland, lawns, golf courses, and other applications unsuitable for regions in which deserts occur naturally. [Pg.304]

In areas where land has been converted to desert from grassland or cropland, it is important to stop doing the things that cause desertification. This means, particularly, not cultivating land that should not be cultivated and not overgrazing land with ruminant animals. [Pg.304]
