Binder recovery by the ignition method

The ignition method for the determination of the binder content is an alternative to the more traditional methods of extracting the bitumen using solvents. Apart from obtaining the results much quicker than any traditional method, the ignition method is also environmentally friendlier and safer to the user. [Pg.449]

The results obtained can be used for process control or to check the compliance of mixtures. [Pg.449]

Prior testing calibration is needed, either on the complete mixture or on its components, aggregate and reclaimed asphalt pavement. The calibration procedure is described in the relevant standard. [Pg.449]

The main apparatus is a furnace capable of reaching temperatures above 600°C that has sufficient capacity to receive the sample, with an internal balance, a reducing furnace emission system, a programming and data collection system and perforated sample metal baskets with a catch pan. [Pg.449]

A sufficient mass of the sample is preheated in an oven at 110°C, weighted and placed in the furnace set at the target temperature, usually 540°C, also determined during the calibration. [Pg.449]
