Although the term binary indicates exactly two elements, a few acids that contain more than two elements are named according to the rules for naming binary acids. If no oxygen is present in the formula for the acidic compound, the acid is named in the same way as a binary acid, except that the root of the second part of the name is the root of the polyatomic ion that the acid contains. Binary compounds with two nonmetals are named with the element to the left or below in the periodic table named first. Many ionic compounds, such as NaCl, KBr, Znlj, and AI2O3, are binary compounds, that is, compounds formed from just two elements. For binary compounds, the first element named is the metal cation, followed by the nonmetallic anion. Thus, NaCl is sodium chloride. We name the anion by taking the first part of the element name (the chlor- of chlorine) and adding -ide. The names of KBr, Znh, and AI2O3 are potassium bromide, zinc iodide, and aluminum oxide, respectively.
