The significance of this novel attempt lies in the inclusion of both the additional particle co-ordinate and in a mechanism of particle disruption by primary particle attrition in the population balance. This formulation permits prediction of secondary particle characteristics, e.g. specific surface area expressed as surface area per unit volume or mass of crystal solid (i.e. m /m or m /kg). It can also account for the formation of bimodal particle size distributions, as are observed in many precipitation processes, for which special forms of size-dependent aggregation kernels have been proposed previously. [Pg.245]

Thus, for a given particle loading, , the fine fraction in the bimodal assembly is a function of only the diameter ratio, dID a surprisingly simple result for an otherwise complex phenomenon. However, the inclusion of the liquid phase to the above particle assembly should modify the result somewhat. This can be seen very simply by expressing the interstitial particle population of the fines as a function of the continuous phase ... [Pg.709]

The fracture mode of both forgings was by the microvoid nucleation and growth process (Figure 4). Microvoids nucleate at nonmetallic inclusions in the steel (sulfides, oxides, etc) and grow under strain until they coalesce at fracture (10). While the CF heats had a fairly uniform microvoid size distribution on the fracture surface, the HERF steel fracture surface had a bimodal distribution of microvoids with large microvoids surrounded by clusters of fine microvoids. [Pg.226]

The first step towards inclusion of a mixture model in a PopPK analysis is often graphical examination of the histograms of the EBEs of the model parameters that are treated as random effects assuming no mixture is present in the distribution of the random effects (i.e., the model does not include a mixture distribution), with clear multimodality used as strong evidence that a mixture distribution should be included in the model. This approach is not ideal since in order to visually detect a bimodal distribution of two normally distributed random variates, the subpopulation means must be separated by at least two standard deviations (Schilling,... [Pg.224]

The ultramafic inclusions in Fig. 16.6c have a bimodal distribution of the Sr/ Sr ratios and a low average Rb/Sr ratio of 0.030 0.038 (la). Three friable inclusions define a straight line on the Rb-Sr geo-chronometry diagram in Fig. 16.7 that corresponds to a date of 1,140 Ma (k = 1.42 x 10" year 0 and an initial Sr/ Sr ratio of 0.70345. The geological significance of this date is questionable because it relies entirely on the elevated Sr/ Sr ratio of sample CC-82 which has a low strontium concentration of only 3.01 ppm and is therefore susceptible to contamination by ground water or meltwater. [Pg.526]
