Bias strength

In the category of industrial appHcations, nylon is the predominant fiber used in the carcass of bias tmck, racing car, and airplane tires because of its exceUent strength, adhesion to mbber, and fatigue resistance. Nylon is used less in the carcass of radial tires for automobiles and in replacement bias and bias-belted tires because of the development of temporary flat spots. For this reason, nylon has lost most of this market to polyester. [Pg.261]

Two-BIa.de Coaters. In order to coat both sides of a web simultaneously, two flexible blade coaters can be used back-to-back, ie, with both blades pressing against each other and the web between them. The web usually travels vertically upward. Different coatings can be appHed on each side of the web. The blades tend to be thinner and more flexible than the standard blades and the angle to the web is lower. The web has to have sufficient tensile strength to be pulled through the nip. [Pg.306]

In chapter 1, we discussed differences in classification strategies. The strengths and implications of the use of categorical versus dimensional methods of classification were reviewed. In the United States, there has historically been a strong bias toward dimensional typologies (Meehl, 1992). As would be expected, the DSM has been criticized by proponents of a dimensional approach (Carson, 1991). Bias Occurs when there is a tendency to produce results that differ in a systematic manner from the true values. A study with small systematic bias is said to have high accuracy. Bias may lead to over- or underestimation of the strength of an association. The sources of bias in epidemiology are many and over 30 specific types of bias have been identified. The main biases are selection bias, information bias, and bias due to confounding. [Pg.55]

The major elements to be considered in the risk characterization part include key information, context, sensitive subpopulations, scientific assumptions, policy choices, variability, uncertainty, bias and perspective, strengths and weaknesses, key conclusions, alternatives considered, and research needs. Whether every element is actually written into the risk characterization or not, depends upon the purpose of the risk assessment and the detail necessary to adequately characterize it. By the time the risk assessment is completed, the universe of policy choices, management decisions, and uncertainties should have been identified, as well as the conclusions of the risk assessment. Because key findings differ for each risk assessment, it is not possible to define exactly what they are genericaUy. Professional judgment is necessary to define them. [Pg.351]
