Benzoic 2,4,6-trinitro

Some substrates like benzoic acid, benzaldehyde etc. are so deactivated that direct nitration to their trinitro derivatives is not possible. Direct nitration of benzoic acid with excess fuming nitric and concentrated sulfuric acids at a temperature of 145 °C for several hours results in the formation of 3,5-dinitrobenzoic acid (54-58 %). The use of oleum in such reactions can significantly reduce the rate of nitration due to carbonyl protonation (see Section 4.3.3). Consequently, indirect routes are used for the synthesis of polynitroarylenes like 2,4,6-trinitrobenzoic acid and 2,4,6-trinitrobenzaldehyde (Section 4.9). 

Other examples of oxynitration include the formation of (1) 2,4,6-trinitro-m-cresol from toluene, (2) 2,4-dinitronaphth-l-ol from naphthalene, (3) 3-chloro-2,4,6-trinitrophenol from chlorobenzene and (4) 3-hydroxy-2,4,6-trinitrobenzoic acid from benzoic acid. ...

Among metabolites in humans the following were identified 4-amino- and 6-aminodinitroioIuene, letranitroazoxy toluene, 2-hydroxylamino-4,6-dinitro-toluene, 2,4-diamino-6-nitro- and 2,6-diamino-4-nitrotoluenc, 2,4,6-trinitro-benzoic acid. A former finding that TNT is toxic to fish has been confirmed. 

The active substance most often used in pyrotechnic whistles is gallic acid (3, 4, 5 trihydroxybenzoic acid). The potassium salts of benzoic acid of 2, 4, dinitrophenol and of picric acid (2, 4, 6 trinitro-phenol) and the sodium salt of salicylic acid (o-hydroxy benzoic acid) are also effective. They are combined with potassium chlorate, perchlorate, or nitrate (Formulas 156—160).
