The most satisfactory derivatives for phenols that are of low molecular weight or monohydric are the benzoate esters. (Their acetate esters are generally liquids or low-melting solids.) Acetates are more useful for high molecular weight and polyhydric phenols. [Pg.59]

B. Phenylglyoxal. The phenylglyoxal hemimercaptal prepared as described in procedure A (69-74 g.) is dissolved in 400 ml. of warm chloroform, and 60 g. (0.30 mole) of powdered cupric acetate monohydrate is added in one portion to the well-stirred solution. The mixture is stirred at room temperature for 1 hour the solids are removed by suction filtration and washed with two 75-ml. portions of chloroform. The combined chloroform filtrate and washings are shaken in a separatory funnel with 75 ml. of water 20 g. of powdered sodium carbonate is added in small portions to the funnel, and the chloroform solution is shaken with the neutralized aqueous solution. (Cautionl Carbon dioxide is evolved.) The aqueous layer is separated and extracted with four 30-ml. portions of chloroform. The chloroform solutions are combined and dried with anhydrous magnesium sulfate, and the chloroform is removed under reduced pressure. The residue is fractionally distilled under reduced pressure to yield 43-49 g. (64-73%, based on ethyl benzoate) of anhydrous phenylglyoxal as a yellow liquid, b.p. 63-65° (0.5 mm.). [Pg.56]

The crystal structures of 4-(6-nitro-2-benzoxazolyl)phenyl 4-(acryloyloxyhexyloxy) benzoate, 2-[4-A,iV-bis(2-hydroxyethyl)] phenyl-6-nitrobenzoxazole monohydrate (A) and 2- 4-/V-(6-hydroxyhexyl)-A-mcthyl] phenyl-6-nitrobenzoxazole (B) have been determined at room temperature by direct methods and refined by full-matrix least-squares method [210], These compounds are monomer precursors of polymers with nonlinear optical properties of the second order. [Pg.179]

In the carbohydrate series, acetates can be cleaved selectively in the presence of benzoates [Scheme 4.329] and p-bromobcnzoates using p-toluenesulfonic acid monohydrate (1 equivalent per acetate) in dichloromethane-methanol (9 1) at 4 °C in 7 h or room temperature in 24 h.616 No benzoyl migration is observed. The method also works in comparable yield with camphorsulfonic acid although the reaction takes 2 days at 40 °C and 3 days at room temperature. [Pg.332]

Grant et al. 1984), from which the enthalpy of solution can be calculated from the slope. If the lines intersect, it is known as the transition temperature, and one consequence of this is that there may be a transition from one polymorph to another, depending on the storage conditions. For example, the formation of the monohydrate of metronidazole benzoate from a suspension of the anhydrate was predicted from such data (Holgaard and Moller 1983). [Pg.82]
