Benzene severity

Millions of organic chemicals are derived from benzene. Several common benzene derivatives are shown here. [Pg.38]

In small portions at a time, add 200 cc. of water, faintly acidulated with hydrochloric acid. Collect the dark precipitate on a Buchner funnel and dry it thoroughly. Place the dark solid in a flask with a reflux condenser and boil with 100 cc. of benzene. Filter off the benzene through a folded filter, leaving the solid in the flask. Repeat the extraction with benzene several times. Combine the filtrates and concentrate to a volume of about 75 cc. On cooling, lead tetraphenyl separates from the solution in colorless needles which melt at 222° ... [Pg.153]

For benzene several isomers are possible, most of them suggested in the last century as possible structures for benzene before the Kekule model was proposed and accepted. Prismane, Dewar benzene, and benzvalene (see Fig. 5) all might be formed from excited benzene molecules provided proper modes of vibration were... [Pg.53]

After exposure to benzene, several factors determine whether harmful health effects will occur and if they do, what the type and severity of these health effects might be. These factors include the amount of benzene to which you are exposed and the length of time of the exposure. Most data involving effects of long-term exposure to benzene are from studies of workers employed in industries that make or use benzene. These workers were exposed to levels of benzene in air far greater than the levels normally encountered by the general population. Current levels of benzene in workplace air are much lower than in the past. Because of this reduction, and the availability of protective equipment such as respirators, fewer workers have symptoms of benzene poisoning. [Pg.18]

In the course of the study of the structure of benzene, several structural formulas have been proposed for it. Well known structures are Kekule s cyclohexatriene, Ladenburg s prismane, Thiele s partial bond structure, and Dewar s bicyclohexadiene. Later, Huckel proposed benzvalene as another structure of benzene. Since Kekule s structure was gradually accepted as the structure of benzene, other structures are only of historical importance. [Pg.104]

Of the halogenobenzo[c]dnnolines the 1-bromo, 4-bromo, and 1,4-dibromo are obtainable by direct bromination (Section IV,B). Some, including the 2- and 3-monobromo compounds, have been prepared by the cyclization of halogenobiphenyls, - - and others, including all the monochloro and monoiodo isomers, by the photocyclization of halogenoazo-benzenes. Several have also been prepared by Sandmeyer reactions of aminobenzo [c] cinnolines. [Pg.184]

As already mentioned, the C-H/C-X coupling between simple arenes and aryl halides to form biphenyl derivatives is difficult in terms of reactivity and regiose-lectivity without directing group. In 2004, Fujita and Yamaguchi [28] reported the iridium-catalyzed direct arylation of benzene with aryl iodides. For example, when the reaction was carried out in the presence of the [Cp IrHCl]2 catalyst (5mol%) and KOt-Bu (3.3 equiv.) at 80°C, 4-methoxybiphenyl 34 was obtained in 66% yield. However, when substituted arenes were used instead of benzene, several... [Pg.1323]

A very efficient method of introducing iodide (and presumably other nucleophiles) into carbohydrates involves the use of trifluoromethanesulphonate esters and their displacement with tetrabutylammonium iodide in refluxing benzene. Several monodeoxymonoiodo compounds were made in this way including compounds (17) and (18) which are difficult to obtain by more usual methods. ... [Pg.68]

Dealkylation of the higher aromatics is a somewhat similar reaction. Benzene can be produced by demethylating toluene and the xylenes or by deethylating ethyl benzene. Several chemical methods are available, but the type of catalyst used in catalytic cracking is also effective. ... [Pg.743]
