The formation of covalent bonds between pesticides and their metabolites, which structurally resemble phenolic and aniline conq>ounds and soil organic matters, is mediated by biotic or abiotic catalysts and results in stabilization against bioavailability. The herbicide bentazon in the soil environment has shown that it can be degraded by hydroxylation at the 6 or 8 positions on the phenyl ring and its metabolites can be incorporated into soil organic matters. [Pg.92]

Molecular weights of the reaction products obtained following the oxidation of the bentazon and catechol were determined by electron ionization (70 eV) mass analysis. A Kratos MS 9/50 double-focusing mass spectrometer was used for the analysis, and sample was introduced by direct insertion probe with the source temperature between 250 and 350 0. H- and C-NMR spectroscopy were used to elucidate the structure of the reaction products. 1-D and 2-D experiments were carried out using high-resolution NMR spectrometers operating in the quadrature mode. All of the 1-D experiments were performed on a Bruker AM-500 spectrometer except for the analysis of the bentazon standard, for which a Bruker WM-360 spectrometer was used. The C-NMR measurements were made with continuous WALTZ decoupling of the protons. [Pg.93]
