Oral antihistamines may be used to alleviate symptoms of allergic rhinoconjunctivitis. These include over-the-counter first-generation antihistamines such as chlorpheniramine maleate (Chlor-Trimeton) and diphenhydramine hydrochloride (Benadryl). Second-generation less sedating antihistamines include fexofenadine hydrochloride (Allegra), loratadine (Claritin), deslorata-dine (Clarinex), and cetirizine hydrochloride (Zyrtec). Dry eye symptoms may be an adverse reaction to oral antihistamines, including second generation.

Benztropine mesylate (cogentin, others), biperiden (akineton), procycUdine (kemadrin), and trihexyphenidyl hydrochloride (artane, others) are tertiary-amine muscarinic receptor antagonists (together with the ethanolamine antihistamine diphenhydramine [benadryl, others]) that gain access to the CNS and can therefore be used when anticholinergics are indicated to treat parkinsonism and the extrapyramidal side effects of antipsychotic drugs (see Chapter 20).
