Animal manures should be composted or well-rotted before use. This is to stabilize their nutrients, which might otherwise be washed out by the rain, and to avoid any risk of damage to plants. Manures can be added to a compost pile, or if mixed with bedding they can be stacked up as a separate manure pile. If poultry manure, which is very rich, has no bedding material with it, mix it into a compost pile or stack it with lots of straw. 

Well-rotted manures improve soil structure and water-holding capacity, and supply nitrogen, potassium, and other plant foods. Their nutrient content will vary with the proportion of manure and urine to straw or other bedding, and on whether they have been stored under cover or outdoors in the rain. However, they should be medium- to high-fertility soil improvers. Apply at a rate of one or two wheelbarrow loads (12-24 gal) per 50 sq ft (50-100 liters/5 sq m). When handling any animal-based product, keep cuts covered, wash your hands under running water before handling food, and be sure your tetanus vaccination is up to date. 

The first general characteristic is that the inhibition produced by campestris was stronger than that produced by the broccoli. The changes in percentages of inhibition depended on the age of the plant as well as on the occurrence of rainfall. When the material was collected after a rainy day and put to dry, the inhibition was not as strong as before or at the beginning of the rain. The differences of inhibition before and after a rain are very clear in the extracts obtained from broccoli. As rain, water brings into solution the atmospheric gases of oxygen, nitrogen and carbon dioxide. As it percolates through the soil, it dissolves and picks up many minerals harmful to boiler operation. Surface waters frequently contain organic matter that must be removed before the water is satisfactory for use in a boiler.
