Beauty coordination number

Details of Cs3Hg2o, which is a beautiful new example of an amalgam with high coordination number polyhedra, have been published recently. It can be described simply as being built up by linked octa-capped icosahedra of mercury or as a framework structure related to the clathrate-I type [6]. 

Before we leave this beautifully symmetric species, can you determine the coordination number of the cation and anion ... 

The supersilyl anions [4], (Fig. 2) work as excellent reaction partners. The tetrahydrofuran adduct NaR 2THF (4) of supersilyl sodium is easily prepared from supersilyl bromide and sodium in refluxing THF. It crystallizes in beautiful yellow needles which — according to the X-ray structure analysis — contain contact pairs of the molecule. On the other hand, the PMDTA adduct (5) of NaR and the benzene adduct 6 of KR form monomeric molecules in the crystals. Donor-free NaR (7) is dimeric, whereby silicon gains the coordination number 5, which is very unusual for supersilyl silicon. 

Studies of a number of polymetallic complexes also provided evidence for C—H coordination. Particularly notable was a beautiful NMR study by Calvert and Shapley of a triosmium complex, which was shown to exist as an equilibrium mixture of two structures, one of which included a C—H—Os linkage.,JJ...

Rule 5. There are a limited number of different kinds of coordination environments for an ion in a crystal. This rule, also known as the rule of parsimony, suggests that there is beauty in simplicity. It would be highly unlikely, for instance, to observe a crystalline structure where some AP+ ions are tetrahedral and others are octahedral, even though the energy difference between CN =4 and CN = 6 is relatively small. 

The beauty of the DD method is that integration can occur perfectly in parallel. Each node integrates the equations of motion for its resident particles. However, at the end of the simulation time-step, it may be the case that integration has led to particles moving outside the region considered by their host node. In this situation, reallocation of particles must occur, and the data stored by the host node on behalf of that particle, (absolute atom number, coordinates and orientations) must be transferred to another node. Again, this must occur in the same 3 stage process, as needed prior to the force calculation.
