Finally, the fast development of electronics and its penetration into everyday life and military technology has stimulated the development of a series of low-power-long-operation and high-power-short-operation batteries. Requirements for high reliability and low cost are basic for both. [Pg.18]

When the battery is discharged at a high current drain in a short time, it is desirable that the decrease in the discharge capacity would be low. In recent years, the high-rate discharge performance is one of the most important battery characteristics because the electric devices tend to need high power for its operation. [Pg.338]

Alternative PPV equipment, designed and used for short-term PPV in non-lCU locations, but suitable for definitive mechanical ventilation during mass casualty events, should be considered. This equipment is available, less expensive, and more easily stockpiled than full feature mechanical ventilators. Alternative PPV equipment must be easy for non-critical care staff, with limited training and experience, to operate, as it is likely that they will be called on to help manage patients with respiratory failure in a mass casualty setting. Because it may also have to be used outside of an ICU, alternative PPV equipment must have appropriate alarm capabilities, battery power, and the ability to function with either high or low pressure oxygen sources. [Pg.455]

Specific power is the electric power obtainable per kilogram of battery and its unit is W/Kg. The evaluation of this variable has to take in consideration that the real power given out by a battery is highly dependent on the load connected to its terminal. Moreover, it is convenient to operate the battery at its maximum power only for a short time of few seconds, otherwise the battery life might be seriously compromised and the battery would operate in a very inefficiently way. [Pg.144]
