Lithium metal had few uses until after World War II, when thermonuclear weapons were developed (see Section 17.11). This application has had an effect on the molar mass of lithium. Because only lithium-6 could be used in these weapons, the proportion of lithium-7 and, as a result, the molar mass of commercially available lithium has increased. A growing application of lithium is in the rechargeable lithium-ion battery. Because lithium has the most negative standard potential of all the elements, it can produce a high potential when used in a galvanic cell. Furthermore, because lithium has such a low density, lithium-ion batteries are light. [Pg.709]

The low-melting-point (157 °C), silver metal is mainly used in alloys to decrease the melting point. Combined with tin, lead, and bismuth to produce soldering metal for wide temperature ranges. The element is highly valuable in the electronics age as its unique properties are ideal for solar cells, optoelectronics, and microwave equipment. The arsenide is used in lasers and is also suitable for transistors. ITO (indium tin oxide) is a transparent semiconductor with wide application in displays, touchscreens, etc. In the household, indium as an additive prevents the tarnishing of silverware. Uses. Large quantities of Sb metal have been used mainly in alloys with Pb (battery grids) and other metals. Alloys are the predominant use of antimony because its brittleness bars direct use. High purity antimony (>99.999%) has a limited but important application in the manufacture of semiconductor devices. When alloyed with elements of 13th group (IIIA), the III-V compounds are formed these have important applications as infrared devices, diodes and Hall effect devices. Also used for fireworks and thermoelectric piles. [Pg.509]

The most important use of barium is as a scavenger in electronic tubes. The metal, often in powder form or as an alloy with aluminum, is employed to remove the last traces of gases from vacuum and television picture tubes. Alloys of barium have numerous applications. It is incorporated to lead alloy grids of acid batteries for better performance and added to molten steel and metals in deoxidizing alloys to lower the oxygen content. Thin films of barium are used as lubricant suitable at high temperatures on the rotors of anodes in vacuum X-ray tubes and on alloys used for spark plugs. A few radioactive isotopes of this element find applications in nuclear reactions and spectrometry. [Pg.77]
