Batch granulation

Pigments are available ia a number of commercial forms including dry powders (either surface treated or untreated), presscakes, flushed colors (thick pastes), fluidi2ed dispersions (pourable pastes), resia predispersed pigments (powders), and plastic color concentrates or master batches (granules) (see PiGLffiNTDISPERSIONS). 

In general, analytical solutions are only available for specific initial or inlet size distributions. However, for batch granulation where the only growth mechanism is coalescence, at long times the size distribution may become self-preserving. The size distribution is selfpreserving if the normahzed size distributions

The parameters for the batch granulation experiment without dust recycle and external seeds V-13 are listed in Tab. 16.15. The measured number and mass density particle size distribution (Fig. 16.34) answer the question as to whether particle growth can be modeled as either size-dependent or size-independent in the estimated range.

The above assumes a pseudo-second order process of coalescence in which all granules have an equal opportunity to collide with all other particles. In real granulation systems this assumption does not hold and collision opportunities are limited to local granules. Paddles instead of ribbons decrease sticking problems and the torque required. Paddle blenders as batch granulators can handle wetter paste. These paddle blenders are occasionally used as continuous granulators and have both lower torque and more applications than a continuous ribbon blender. The movement of the paste helps remove material from the paddles. Formulation of a nontacky paste is aided by using a substance such as microcrystalline cellulose that helps absorb the excess moisture from the mix, yet is plastic and nonsticky.
