Basophil degranulation test

We have tested this method in investigating 18 patients with a known hypersensitivity to penicillin by clinical and laboratory criteria, and have compared it with other procedures, i.e., skin tests and penicillin RAST. Clinically, all the patients could be classified as showing type I reactions. Six patients were excluded from the study, owing to an insufficiant number of basophils, rendering the test not feasible. [Pg.214]

The results shown in Table 8 demonstrate an excellent correlation of skin tests and RAST with the clinical diagnosis. The correlation is, however, much lower for the basophil degranulation test. Interestingly, this result improved when the test was performed several days after the clinical reaction had taken place. Such a study should be extended to other drugs in order to test its feasibility with less well-characterized antigenic determinants. [Pg.214]

Additional biological tests have been suggested to improve the accuracy further. The leukocyte histamine release test has been found helpful (75) but it is expensive and time-consuming. Several surface molecules have been studied as markers, for example CD63. IgE-mediated degranulation of basophils after incubation of the patient s serum with a neuromuscular blocking agent can... [Pg.2491]
