Basic lead silicochromate

Basic lead silicochromate [11113-70-5] (National Lead Co. designation Pigment M-50) is a composite in which basic lead chromate, ie, chrome orange, is precipitated onto a lead siUcate—siUca base. It does not have an appreciable chromate solubiUty and depends on lead oxide for its effectiveness. [Pg.146]

Basic lead silicochromate (4(PbCr04 PbO) -t 3(Si02 4 PbO)) reached certain industrial importance. It was developed to replace red lead. The pigment is a so-called core pigment, in which the active pigment substance (PbCr04) is precipitated onto an inert core (Si02). Because this anticorrosive contains both lead and hexavalent chromium, it has lost its previous economic importance as well [5.53, 5.56]. [Pg.211]

Basic lead silicochromate is composed of basic lead chromate and basic lead silicate firmly bound to a silica core. It was used in coatings for metal protection in structural steel, and finer grades were used in electrocoat paints. Because these pigments contain both lead and hexavalent chromium, due to toxicity and human health reasons, they have lost their commercial importance. [Pg.188]

Basic lead silicochromate is also a bright orange pigment used primarily as a rust inhibitor for steel structures. Because of its low opacity, this pigment is combined with other pigments to produce rust-inhibiting topcoats in different colors. [Pg.92]
