The end users of CBR systems should in principle be able to maintain the case-bases themselves and use the systems for varying inspection types (within certain limits). Adaptation of neural-network based systems, though possible by end-users, is difficult to be done reliably. Adaptation of rule-based systems usually has to be done by the rule-base designer.

The entire domain of "new-lead" discovery has expanded considerably. This development has affected what have traditionally been divergent approaches, namely QSAR and stmcture-based design, leading them to become integrated so as to provide a more powerful approach (135). Single-Loop Controller The single-loop controller (SLC) is a process controller that produces a sin e output. SLCs can be pneumatic, analog electronic, or microprocessor-based. Pneumatic SLCs are discussed in the pneumatic controller section, and analog electronic SLC is not discussed because it has been virtually replaced by the microprocessor-based design.

The passive output stage is the traditional passive, semieonduetor reetifier-based design. It is used for many applieations that are not battery operated, and where switehing power supply effieieneies of between 72 and 84 pereent are aeeeptable. This would inelude many off-line applieations where the heat generated by the supply is easily handled within the power supply. 

A variation of the two-shaft gas turbine is the aircraft derivative machine. The gas generator is an aircraft jet engine or an adaptation thereof. The power turbine may be of a custom design. Alternately, aircraft based designs may be used. They are covered in API Standard 616 [12].
