Since common stock (or equity) costs more than bonds, why do companies issue stock This is because a company is only able to borrow money at a good rate if the lender is 100% sure he can get his money back plus interest. The less sure he is that he can get his investment back, the higher the interest rate. One of the many problems that trouble Americans engaged in fishery industries is that it is hard to get risk capital to finance new vessels and equipment. Banks are extremely reluctant to lend money on even the most conservative kinds of fishery ventures. This is one of the reasons why our fishing industries are characteristically backward and unenterprising. In other parts of the world, particularly in some Oriental countries, people with capital do invest in fishing vessels and they do lend money to fishermen to tide them over from one season to another, but they minimize their risk by imposing extremely onerous terms. Consequently, their fishermen never get out of debt and spend their lives in bondage hardly better off than slaves. A more reliable method is called a parallel redundant UPS system, but it requires a more sophisticated control system. Both UPS units are energised to share the common load equally. When one unit fails it is switched out of service and the second unit takes over the full load. Figure 17.3 shows the system which also has an off-load bypass supply switched in service by a static switch. This method can be expanded to incorporate three or more units in parallel, although this is seldom found in oil industry practice. It is a practice used in the computer-based industries such as banking and flnancial investment. It is a method that lends itself to piecemeal expansion. [Pg.457]
