Backward bending

Let us begin by asking whether the backbone of a protein can be described as a tube. Figure 12.5 indeed shows that, in its native state, the protein backbone can be thought of as the axis of a tube of approximate radius of cross-section (A) equal to 2.7 A. Interestingly, the tube radius shows small variations, especially in the vicinity of backward bends [36].
