Aromatic Azo Compounds Reduction of aromatic azo compounds involves a four-electron process that proceeds through a short-lived intermediate, hydrazoben-zene, that ends with complete reductive cleavage of the azo hnkage and formation of aromatic amines. [Pg.280]

Further complications of the reduction of aromatic nitro compounds are the possibility of complete reduction to aromatic amines (which may condense with nitroso compounds to give the desired azo compounds), reduction of azo compounds to the corresponding hydrazo compounds, followed by a benzidine (or semidine) rearrangement. Azo-compounds can be obtained by reduction of nitro-compounds, or by oxidation of hydrazo-compounds. They are usually prepared, however, by reacting a phenol or amine with a diazonium salt. The coupling usually takes place in the position para to the hydroxyl or amino group, but if this position is occupied it goes to the ortho position, e.g. [Pg.49]

The only practical method of preparing 1,4-aminonaphthol is from a-naphthol through an azo dye, the nitroso compound not being readily available. A completely different method of synthesis of azo compounds from diazonium salts involving radical intermediates was found by Citterio et al. (1980, 1982 c), Cit-terio and Minisci (1982), and Fontana et al. (1988). It is a new general synthesis of arylazoalkanes based on the addition of an alkyl radical to an arenediazonium ion followed by reduction of the intermediate azo radical cation adduct by a metal salt (Scheme 12-80). Possibly the most significant discovery in the metabolism of aromatic azo compounds had implications that heralded the age of modem chemotherapy.
