The transplanted heart is characterized by autonomic denervation, therefore chronotropic incompetence and, often during intermittent episodes of allograft rejection, sinus node dysfunction are not abnormal - especially in the early postoperative period.

Another possible cause of respiratory-related disturbances in Parkinson s patients may be related to changes in cardiac autonomic control during sleep (134). Functional imaging studies reported the occurrence of selective cardiac sympathetic denervation in Parkinson s patients (135), though the clinical significance of this finding is still undetermined.

AChE can be located on the postsynaptic as well as the presynaptic membrane. For example, in the cholinergic synapses of the autonomic ganglia AChE is located on the presynaptic membrane only it disappears after the degeneration of preganglionic fibres. In skeletal muscle, on the contrary, the major portion of the AChE is localized on the postsynaptic membrane and remains intact after denervation.
