Astragalus root

The Astragalus root and its polysaccharide (APS) have a lot of biological activity such as antineoplasm, antihepatitis and antisenility [314]. In this article are reported the therapeutic effect on epatitis of Astragalus polysaccharide the experiments in vivo showes that the interferon induced in the plasma of patients with hepatitis increased 3 titres after the treatment by oral administration of APS, identical with the reported documents in vitro.

Toxicity of astragalus root is very low a crude water extract (75 and lOOg/kg p.o.) produced no adverse effects in mice within 48 hours LD50 in mice 40 g/kg i.p. The former oral doses are 375 and 500 times the usual effective diuretic dose in humans (wang zhou and wang).
