Members of the Association of South-East Asian Nations (ASEAN), Malaysia included, have yet to formulate common rules for dmg regulation. Nonetheless, efforts have been made towards harmonization in terms of voluntary standards. Through the ASEAN Technical Cooperation Project in Pharmaceuticals, a number of reference substances and guidelines have been developed (17). Furthermore, agreements made for the ASEAN Free Trade Area have harmonized and reduced import tariffs on a number of goods, including pharmaceutical raw materials and finished products.

Regional cooperation remains a mechanism to overcome many of these problems for developing countries. Individual countries have limited resources to deal with the problem. An example is the regional cooperation on the harmonization of MRLs of pesticides among the Association of South East Asian Coxmtries. Collaborative efforts are also being made to generate data on crops of common interest for the purpose of setting maximum residue limits of pesticides. 

A natural gas pipeline that would traverse the countries of Southeast Asia was proposed. The countries are specifically those of the Association of South East Asian Nations (ASEAN). This new pipeline would mean an entrance into the chemical and petrochemical business for these nations [73].

The Association of South East Asian Nations (ASEAN) [19] was established in 1967 by five countries, namely Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore and Thailand. Brunei Darussalam joined in 1984, Vietnam in 1995, Laos and Myanmar in 1997, and Cambodia in 1999. The ASEAN region has a population of about 500 million. 

Asian countries in which cosmetic regulations concerning substances have been based on the EU Cosmetics Directive will be considered later on. These are countries such as China and India, and also the Association of South East Asia Nations (ASEAN) which integers other 10 Asian countries. 

In the South East Asian Quinine Artesunate Malaria Trials (SEQUAMAT), a multicenter, randomized, open study in 1461 patients (including 202 children) artesunate was associated with a 35% reduction in the risk of mortahty compared with quinine [10. Artesunate has therefore been recommended by the WHO as the treatment of choice for severe and complicated malaria in low transmission areas and in the second and third trimester of pregnancy. 

Open Ocean Recent measurements of PCBs and DDT family compounds in surface sea water and air samples over the ocean on a regional oceanic scale are few and are exemplified in Figure 2(A-D). Despite the paucity of data, some important findings are evident. There are higher concentrations of DDT in surface sea waters and air overlying the oceans near south-east Asia in comparison to the other areas sampled.
