Reliable analysis methods based on TLC, HPLC, GC, ELISA, and EIA are available for the determination of zearalenone, a-zearalenol, and /3-zearalenol. As far as the application of HPLC in the analysis of zearalenone is concerned, the Bennett et al. method (100) has also been adopted as an official method of analysis by the Association of Official Analytical Chemists International (17). The method involves extraction with chloroform and purification with liquid/liquid partition into 2% sodium hydroxide. After additional purification steps, determination is performed by C18 with a fluorescence detection (236 nm excitation, 418 nm emission). The method also allows for the determination of -zearalenone, and both analytes are determined in corn at levels...

Collaborative study A study by others to validate the proposed method. Several national agencies set the standards. In the U.S. these are the Association of Official Analytical Chemists, International (AOAC Inti.), the United States Pharmacopeia (USP) and the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM).

Many professional societies have specified definite instructions for sampling given materials [e.g., the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM www.astm.org). the Association of Official Analytical Chemists International (AOAC International www.aoac.orgl. and the American Public Health Association (APHA www.apha.orgll. By appropriate application of experience and statistics, these materials can be sampled as accurately as the analysis can be performed. Often, however, the matter is left up to the analyst. The ease or complexity of sampling will, of course, depend on the nature of the sample. 

In conclusion, although a large number of valuable chemical methods for the analysis of YTXs have been developed, none has yet been validated. National and international orgaifizations such as the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry, the Association of Official Analytical Chemists International, the European Committee for Standardization, have undertaken collaborative studies to provide standard and official methods based on some of the above screening and/or investigation procedures in the near future.
