Assay Schiff bases

Naphthalene- and anthracene-derived phenols did, however, almost uniformly precipitate (Table VI). In natural materials (not grapes or wines) which contain them they would be included in the formaldehyde precipitable group. Several primary amines capable of SchifFs base formation reacted with formaldehyde to lose their F-C oxidizability, but only the resorcinol analog, 3-aminophenol, precipitated (Table VIII). Sulfite also reacted but did not precipitate with formaldehyde, and the F-C oxidizability was suppressed (Table IX). The resorcinol derivative, 2,4-dimethoxycinnamic acid, formed a precipitate with formaldehyde, but it did not react appreciably in the F-C assay. [Pg.210]

Representatives of all kinds have been explored for synthetic applications while mechanistic investigations were mainly focussed on the distinct FruA enzymes isolated from rabbit muscle [196] and yeast [197,198]. For mechanistic reasons, all DHAP aldolases appear to be highly specific for the donor component DHAP [199], and only a few isosteric replacements of the ester oxygen for sulfur (46), nitrogen (47), or methylene carbon (48) were found to be tolerable in preparative experiments (Fig. 7) [200,201], Earlier assay results [202] that had indicated activity also for a racemic methyl-branched DHAP analog 53 are now considered to be artefactual [203]. Dihydroxyacetone sulfate 50 has been shown to be covalently bound via Schiff base formation, but apparently no a-deprotonation occurred as neither H/D-exchange nor C-C... [Pg.125]

Another example concerns the immobilization of a biocatalyst—the enzyme glucose oxidase (GOD)—to the silica nanotubes [4]. GOD was immobilized, on both the inside and outside surfaces, via the aldehyde silane route. These GOD-nanotubes (60 nm diameter) were dispersed into a solution containing 90 mM glucose and also the components of the standard dianisidine-based assay for GOD activity. A GOD activity of 0.5 0.2 units per milligram of nanotubes was obtained. These studies also showed that protein immobilized via the Schiff base route is not leached from the nanotubes, where GOD activity ceased when the nanotubes were filtered from the solution. [Pg.698]

In the drug-discovery field, chemists can use NIR to monitor the progress of reactions. Hearn and co-workers reported a NIR method to monitor the preparation of compounds for screening as antituberculosis drugs. The reaction of isonicotinic acid hydrazide (INH) with carbonyl compounds in the preparation of Schiff bases was followed. Forbes, Persinger, and Smith " described a NIR conformance test method to assay and identify two chemical intermediates used in the manufacture of Loracarbef, a carbacephalosporin. [Pg.3636]

The concentration of the labile form of Hb Aic (Schiff base) fluctuates rapidly in response to acute changes in plasma glucose concentrations and should be removed before analysis by charge-based assays. This may be accomplished by incubating red blood cells in saline or in buffer solutions at pH 5 to 6, or by dialysis or ultrafiltration of hemolysates. [Pg.883]
